Notes for using agate mortar:
1. Do not make it contact with fluoric acid.
2. Do not heat it up or dry it in oven.
3. In case of large lump or crystalline sample, it should be cracked outside and then put into agate mortar for grinding.
4. Mortar should be washed with water after using. If necessary, it can be washed with diluted hydrochloric acid first and then with water. If it is still not clean, add a little salt and grind it for some time, then pour it out and wash the mortar again. If necessary, sea sand can be used instead of salt to clean.
5. For objects with high hardness and coarse granularity, it would be better not to grind them in agate mortar to not scratch the surface.
6. When grind sample, the mortar should be placed on an object that is not easy to slide and the pestle should be kept vertical. Large pieces of solid can only be crushed, intead of mashing by pestle, otherwise the mortar, pestle will damage,or solid will splash out. Explosive substances can only be crushed lightly without grinding.When grind substances those are corrosive to skin, thick paper or plastic sheets should be placed on the mortar, and perforate the central of the sheet, insert pestle into the hole and grind the sample. Mass of solid added into the mortar shall not exceed 1/3 of its volume.
