Alumina Ceramic Crucible Instructions
Alumina ceramic crucible can withstand high temperature about 1200℃. It is suitable for melting samples with acidic substances such as K2S2O7, but not applicable for melting samples with alkaline substances as molten solvent, such as NaOH, Na2O2, Na2CO3, which will cause corrosion to crucible. In addition, alumina ceramic crucible should be kept away from hydrofluoric acid (HFA).
Under reduction–oxidation atmosphere (1650℃~1700℃), 99% alumina ceramic crucible shows excellent high-temperature insulation properties and mechanical strength, also the thermal conductivity is large and thermal expansion is low. Even at 1700℃ temperature environment, 99% alumina ceramic does not react with air, water vapor, hydrogen or CO, the maximum working temperature is 1800℃ for short-term use.
Under reduction–oxidation atmosphere (1290℃~1350℃), 85% alumina ceramic crucible shows excellent high-temperature insulation properties and mechanical strength, also the thermal conductivity is large and thermal expansion is low. It is applicable for long term use in stable environment where temperature change is not too fast. The maximum working temperature is 1400℃ for short-term use.
Application methods of alumina ceramic crucibles
- Crucible and Lid
When use alumina ceramic crucible to melt solid substance with high heat, keep the crucible lid inclined on crucible to prevent the heated substance spilling out, while allow the air flow into the crucible freely for complete oxidation reaction.
- Heating with Crucible Support Apparatus
The crucible is often placed on a pipeclay triangle and heated by flame because of its small bottom area. The crucible can be placed on the iron tripod vertically or with an angle, depends on the experiment requirement.
- Cooling
Heated alumina ceramic crucible should not be placed on a cold metal table immediately to prevent it from cracking due to rapid cooling, also it should not be placed on a wooden table instantly either to not burn the table or cause fire. The correct way is to remain it on a tripod or put it on an asbestos net to let it cool down slowly and naturally.
- Handling with Tool
Use crucible tongs to handle crucibles.
- Cleaning
Usually alumina ceramic crucibles can be cleaned by boiling with diluted hydrochloric acid(HCl) to preserve the material purity and its high temperature resistance performance.
