Function of Fluxing Agent in Carbon/Sulfur Analysis

1.Melting sample by the heat released during combustion process, and adding fluxing agent can decrease melting point.


2.Not only fluxing, tungsten-Tin accelerator also has function of heat release, acidity-alkalinity adjustment of medium, mixing, catalyzing, stabilizing combustion, anti-interference, etc.


3.Tungsten-Tin accelerator is widely used in high frequency furnace, and it can fulfill technical requirement of carbon/sulfur test.

Tin Accelerator

4.characteristics of tungsten accelerator are as follows:

1)Tungsten is the most refractory metal, with melting point of 3380℃. It’s easy to be oxidized, so used as additive.

2)Tungsten begins to be oxidized and release a lot of heat at 650℃ with oxygen flow, it has high calorific value and fast reaction rate.

3)Oxide of tungsten-tungsten trioxide belongs to acidic oxide, with loose volume, its generation benefits emission of CO2 and SO2, since no cover layer is formed and cover the sample.

4)Tungsten trioxide sublimes significantly at higher than 900℃. Escape of tungsten trioxide can accelerate diffusion of carbon and sulfur, so carbon and sulfur in sample can be oxidized completely.

5)After volatilizing form molten bath, tungsten trioxide converts to solid at 700~800℃, covers on Fe2O3 that still remained on tube, so adsorption of sulfur to tube is prevented.

6)Baseline value of tungsten is very low, so can be used for low carbon/ sulfur test.


5、characteristics of tin accelerator are as follows:

1) significantly.

2) Besides fluxing, tin can also release heat and stabilize combustion.

3) Oxide of tin is SnO2, which belongs to alkaline oxide, measuring value of sulfur will decrease if tin is over added, so it should be added moderately.

4) For Tungsten-Tin accelerator, the main function of tin is fluxing, to reduce the effect that caused by insufficient fluxing function of tungsten.


6、For non-magnetic material, pure iron should be supplemented.


7、For carbon test only, it will be better to use copper as additive.
